Living in Lincoln, Massachusetts

A small rural town close to Cambridge and Boston, Lincoln is a community with great schools and large houses on big lots. It is best for people who love to live one with nature and land. There are only 7-8K people living in Lincoln.  including residents of Hanscom Air Force Base that live within town limits. The town has a rich colonial history and large amounts of public conservation land.

Getting around

Neighboring towns are Lexington, Concord, Waltham, Weston, Sudbury, Bedford. Lincoln is 12 miles to Boston and there is an easy way to get to Boston via Commuter Rail Fitchburg line which stops in Boston’s North Station, or you can stop earlier and hop on the red line on the T  to go somewhere else.  Lincoln also has an easy access to Rt 2 and 128/95 major highways.

Best Restaurants/cafes

In The Tack Room The menu is upscale pub fare. You have to  try the cornbread cupcake that comes with mashed potato frosting, fried chicken and gravy. They have a fully stocked bar with beers from around New England. It was featured on Phantom Gourmet recently. There is also the Twisted Tree cafe but otherwise, if you want more selection, you need to travel away from Lincoln.

Grocery Stores

Codman community Farms  has eggs year round.  During the growing season there are so many home grown vegetables, fruit and alliums to enjoy.  In the freezer is meat, and the fridge always has eggs, cheese, milk and more.  Way better than a grocery store.  They also have bread and pantry items.

Pros and Cons of living in the town of Lincoln

One of the pros of living in Lincoln is that the town is less congested than the neighboring towns, houses are far from each other, there is free parking at the commuter rail station, everybody knows each other and many are involved in the very democratic and progressive town government.  Even though Lincoln is pretty rural, it is relatively close to Boston, it will only take you 30 min to drive to downtown Boston without traffic.

Homes in Lincoln have Private Sewer, that means there is no central sewer system in Lincoln. You have a septic tank. Lincoln does NOT offer curbside trash collection, you have to take your trash to the “Transfer station”, where residents can also leave things like bikes they no longer use that somebody else can take. You can also hire a private trash collection company. Many towns in Massachusetts have this.

There aren’t many playgrounds for kids, most are close to the town center. If you live on the path of Hanscom Air base planes, you will hear them once in a while.

Median sale price for Single Family is $1,475,000. There are mostly single family homes, condominiums in townhouse style and no big apartment buildings. You can also buy land here to build a house.
