Living in Lincoln, Massachusetts
A small rural town close to Cambridge and Boston, Lincoln is a community with great schools and large houses on big lots. It is best for people who love to live one with nature and land. There are only 7-8K people living in Lincoln. including residents of Hanscom Air Force Base that live within town limits. The town has a rich colonial history and large amounts of public conservation land.
Getting around
Neighboring towns are Lexington, Concord, Waltham, Weston, Sudbury, Bedford. Lincoln is 12 miles to Boston and there is an easy way to get to Boston via Commuter Rail Fitchburg line which stops in Boston’s North Station, or you can stop earlier and hop on the red line on the T to go somewhere else. Lincoln also has an easy access to Rt 2 and 128/95 major highways.
Schools
Lincoln is home to one public K–8 school, the Lincoln School. High School students attend Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School in Sudbury. Lincoln-Sudbury High School is 85th in Ma, according to US News High school rankings. Grad rate is 98%
In addition to the Lincoln School, the district operates the Primary and Middle Schools at Hanscom Air Force Base through a contract with the federal government.
Both Hanscom Field and Lincoln town have a preschool, those are located in separate sections of the two schools. The new building of the Lincoln school will be finished hopefully soon and is zero emission and built with the latest building technologies.
Parks, Lakes and Recreation
DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum - an indoor and outdoor museum that has a large permanent collection of contemporary artworks and sculptures. Mass Audubon Drumlin Farmis a Farmyard with animal barns, kid-friendly educational activities & native wildlife exhibits.
Minuteman National Park - The grounds, trails and parking areas of Minute Man National Historical Park are open daily, from sunrise to sunset. The park closes at sunset. There is no fee to visit the park.This is a great area surrounded by nature and full of history. The Battle Trail is nice for a walk or to bike. There are a number of historic buildings and sights along the very long trail.
Best Restaurants/cafes
In The Tack Room The menu is upscale pub fare. You have to try the cornbread cupcake that comes with mashed potato frosting, fried chicken and gravy. They have a fully stocked bar with beers from around New England. It was featured on Phantom Gourmet recently.There is also the Twisted Tree cafe but otherwise, if you want more selection, you need to travel away from Lincoln.
Grocery Stores
Codman community Farms haseggs year round. During the growing season there are so many home grown vegetables, fruit and alliums to enjoy. In the freezer is meat, and the fridge always has eggs, cheese, milk and more. Way better than a grocery store. They also have bread and pantry items.
Pros and Cons of living in the town of Lincoln
One of the pros of living in Lincoln is that the town is less congested than the neighboring towns, houses are far from each other, there is free parking at the commuter rail station, everybody knows each other and many are involved in the very democratic and progressive town government. Even though Lincoln is pretty rural, it is relatively close to Boston, it will only take you 30 min to drive to downtown Boston without traffic.
Homes in Lincoln have Private Sewer, that means there is no central sewer system in Lincoln. You have a septic tank. Lincoln does NOT offer curbside trash collection, you have to take your trash to the “Transfer station”, where residents can also leave things like bikes they no longer use that somebody else can take. You can also hire a private trash collection company. Many towns in Massachusetts have this.
There aren’t many playgrounds for kids, most are close to the town center. If you live on the path of Hanscom Air base planes, you will hear them once in a while.
Housing
